PhotoJournalistic : Children's Moment

She was collecting dead leaves away from the tiny little plant

Up up and beyond...eh, away!

Playing game in a handphone

A sweet smile while helping her sister

"I feel dizzy, please help me get up!"

PhotoJournalistic : An Introduction

Firstly I would like to announce on the new labels - PhotoJournalistic - will be added to this blog. As an introduction, let me explain on the title itself, the photojournalism.

According to Wikipedia,

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) that creates images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, and in some cases to video used in broadcast journalism or for personal use. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (such as documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by the qualities of:

  • Timeliness — the images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events.
  • Objectivity — the situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone.
  • Narrative — the images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to the viewer or reader on a cultural level.

Like a writer, a photojournalist is a reporter but he or she must often make decisions instantly and carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to significant obstacles (physical danger, weather, crowds).

So, I hope that I will able to produce a journal (with photo of course in any event that I involved later on) and also a picture everyday in 'A Pic A Day Keep Girls Nearer' for all my blog readers

update (got this from DCM)
Some misconceptions about what constitutes as photojournalism here.

Photojournalism has nothing to do with articles with tons of text. It is just a story as told/shown via pictures with minimal text, mostly captions.

When NAT GEO (or the defunct Life Magazine) is often refers to as photojournalistic work, it means the photos as shot by the photographers assigned to the assignments, and has nothing to do with the accompanying stories written by the Nat Geo staff writers or freelance writers. Such photos are categorised as photo essays. The writers concentrated on the text articles, and theg photographers take care of the photos. And many people who bought/subscribed to Nat Geo usually don't bother to read the stories but are amazed with the photographs published, and the captions themselves would tell the readers what they ought to know anyway.

The term "journalist" refers to people who contribute/write articles but adding "photo" to it doesn't mean a photojournalist is someone who has to shoot the photos and write the article as well. It basically means a person who tells the story via the images he/she shoots.

The next time anyone of you come across someone who calls himself/herself a "photojournalist" and states that the profession includes "writing tons of articles and shooting the images" by himself/herself, you are basically meeting a writer or a journalist who shoots some photos just to accompany the written articles, and is not a true photojournalist at all. Never is and never was.

Here is a truth story that took place in 1985, KL.
Every year, Reuters awarded scholarships to working photographers/photojournalists in Asia to study photojournalism for a year at the famed Missouri School of Journalism in USA. Each Asian country that took part can have only 1 winner to represent his/her country to enter the prestigious college. A total of 15 press photographers from M'sia took part in order to win that 1985 scholarship from Reuters. The winner who secured it won it hands down... over the other 14 contenders.

The requirement needed to secure the scholarship was to present a photo essay of a news worthy event or a news feature depicted via photos/captions. Those 14 other contenders all submitted articles with tons of text accompanied by a few images, leaving only 1 of them who sent in an actual photo essay depicting a day in the life of a local drug addict. The rest is history.

  • Shoot at about 7pm right after jogging around the lake near my house
  • Purposely want to shoot the sun but it seems that clouds filter the direct sunlight and create the orange effect at the border
  • Amplify the green, yellow and blue colors to create a strong difference between field and sky

PhotoJournalistic: Teenage Gig Fantastic Event

Thanks to Jae kerana mengajak aku join pergi jual baju kt gig ni (tapi aku tak join la masuk gigs, terase rugi pulak tak melompat-lompat ni. next time la) Tujuan sebenarnya untuk menghilangkan nafsu kebosanan kat rumah (nafsu ke?) Dah naik lemau ni.

Tujuan disebaliknya mestilah untuk mengasah skill mengambil gambar. Tapi gambar2 yg diambil hanyalah di luar event gig (aktiviti sampingan = menjual baju Jae) Bila tengok balik, memang memerlukan latihan lagi. mungkin perlu upgrade kot.

Keadaan indoor (lighting poor) memang memerlukan skill tinggi. Internal flash mmg x best. Nak taknak, kene naikkan ISO (semua gambar kat bawah ni diambil menggunakan ISO 800). As a conclusion, kene simpan duit nak beli flashgun SB600 nih!

p/s: weyh Jae, aku promote ArtSyndrome ko nih, bagila royalti sket =P

Wargh hahaha

3 facts bout this photo;
  • Taken around 7.30pm at 30 seconds exposure with lowest apperture to create starry effect of the street lamp light
  • I can say this is one of the successful night photo ever taken with the light trail effect from the traffic
  • The sky had been edited to look darker since the initial picture taken is brighter with lots of noise from the ghosting effect created by the nearest street lamp.

3 facts bout this photo;
  • The shadow of my 3 sisters after jogging at the lake's jogging track around 7pm
  • Added red overlay filter to give warm evening effect as well as to increase the shadow effect
  • To take this kind of picture, make sure you focus your camera to the sky, not to the model. Otherwise, your model will be visible and no shadow effect will be created
Got these quotes from a blog that just lost its owner.
  • God was showing off when he made you.
  • I lost my teddy bear. Can I cuddle with you instead?
  • You're so hot you melt the elastic in my underwear. -haha-
  • Hey c'mon now, I'm ugly, you're ugly, it's perfect
  • Do you have a map? I keep getting lost in your eyes.
  • You must be tired because you've been running through my dreams all night

  1. Taken during visit to Taman Botani Bukit Cerakah, Shah Alam when climbing down from a very very high tree-house.
  2. A little lomography effect was applied to show the path taken is colored initially but towards the end of the stair is black and white.
  3. The symbolize of the color represent bout the life journey on how you will decorate your own life path. You can be sure now, but who know what will come later.

A Pic A Day Keep Girls Nearer

Cuti memang bosan kalu dapat orang jenis macam aku nih. Malas betul nak keluar rumah, lebih-lebih lagi tym malam. Tapi kalu dah berjaya keluar, memang dah tak ingat nak balik rumah.

Jangan keliru dengan tajuk kat atas tu, saje je bosan2 letak kat situ dgn tujuan kurang ikhlas untuk menarik lagi ramai ke blog ni.

Disebalik tajuk tu sebenarnya aku just nak post kan satu gambar setiap hari untuk kutukan, cacian, kritikan, tohmahan serta pujian dari visitor. Nak senyap, tak beri pape komen pun tak kisah.

Jawapannya, malas nak manage byk2 akaun la. ade satu cukup la. Ramai yg cakap "Kalu ko nak berjaya jadi photographer nanti, baik ko post dlm flickr etc etc senang nti peminat nak tgk. Aku jawab malas

Klik je kat BforBurn Photography kt sebelah untuk tgk koleksi gambar =p

Pic of the day;

3 facts bout this photo;

-My first night photo
-Shoot at 8pm at Pantai Chenta Berahi eh Pantai Cahaya Bulan ( No moon founded at that nite)
-Purposely want to shoot light trail (you can see red light line in the middle) but its a failure since the light from the shop is too bright

Be creative using brain, not tools

I would like to share with you all photographers and also everyone;

I received a call from Canon last 2 days. My special camera arrived and they told me that I can collect it anytime. I was so excited to receive a new camera body. According to my history, 1 camera only last 1 year. Digital technology is different from the old analog technology. Old analog SLRs are mostly mechanical. They have no processor that become the most expensive part in a dSLR. I remember how i moved from d70 to d70s then d200 and converted to Canon with 30D and now slightly more in term of the features. Obviously, this Canon 5D is a fullframe camera. It’s not the top range camera. Some people asked me to buy the 1-series. Very often people told me this sentence “Angkat 1d mk III lah, u can afford that”. And normally i answered, “I’m a wedding photographer, not a sport shooters. No practical points driving a ferrari at Jalan Masjid India”. It’s not the matter weather we can afford or not. I just try to be practical.

I only need a camera as a tool of creativity. Not something that will create good photos on its own. Most of the people think, expensive camera will produce good photos. I don’t deny that but it’s not a major factor. When people asked me my unfavorite question “Camera apa SN pakai?” I normally answered them “My camera is my eyes and my eyes is my camera…but I use Canon system as a tool for capturing” <—kalau tak jawap nanti org cakap kita lokek pulak, tapi kita nak org tau camera tu cuma tools jer. Cap ayam pun boleh

Changing the camera every year for me and CandidSyndrome photographes is our tradition. That’s another way for us to ensure the quality of the pictures will not be dragged down by the system limitation. Hence, we upgrade a new and fresh camera every year. That’s why for most professional photographers, they lost in price. But they give u quality in return. By average I shoot 10,000++ images a month and about 120,000++ images a year. Talking about digital technology, most of the camera will end at 100,000 shuttercount. Then either they have to change the new shutter or buy a new camera. The costs for both aren’t far.

credit to Mr. Saiful Nang for this nice, beautiful tips

Aku, Dia dan CBR part 12

dari part 1

Aku terus mencapai handset aku. Damn it. Nasib baik terjatuh atas karpet, taklah teruk sangat impaknya.

Terus aku membuka ruang mesej. Hampa. Mesej dari Azri rupanya.

‘Adess bro...tak join ke? Camni ar. Nak merajuk la ni... T_T’

Aku malas nak membazir kredit untuk melayan karenah si Azri ni, lantas membalasnya dalam hati.

‘Bajet comel la tu. Malas aku nak layan. Pergi main jauh-jauh’

Puteri masih belum membalas mesej aku. Aku kecewa dengan diri aku. Kenapalah aku tak teringat langsung nak baca mesej tu dari semalam. Tak pasal-pasal terasa down yang amat sangat. Kalau tak, boleh la aku wish dia ‘Sweet Dream’ sebelum dia tidur semalam. Nampak sweet sikit aku ni.

Truutut….Truutut. Dengan girang aku terus flip up handset. YES…dari Puteri. Berdebar-debar aku menekan butang ‘read’

‘Eeeeeiy...baru bangun ke? Ni apa nak jadi ni? Dah mandi belum?’

Eh, banyak soal pulak si bidadari ni. Sambil tersenyum dan gelak-gelak sikit, aku membalas mesejnya,

‘Dah lama la bangun, dah siap mandi lagi tu.

Kenapa mesej you ada bau hangit ni? Haha
S: Dah mandi la. I siap pakai perfume lagi ni. Serius wangi. Tu bau hangit jiran you tu.
P: Okay, okay. Hari ni I takde buat ape pun. Rest je. I baru je tengok blog you…Tak sangka jiwang jugak you ni ye.
S: Eh, jiwang ke? You silap baca blog lain kot. Post I semua karut-karut je tu
P: Betul. I confirm it’s your blog. Siap ada gambar you posing atas moto besar lagi. I ada baca post you yang pasal your ex I think.

Aku terpaku. Mesej Puteri tidak aku balas. Entah mengapa tiba-tiba terasa hati disusuk sembilu.

S: Hai Puteri.
P: Eerr, hai Saf…I’m sorry. Really sorry tadi. I tak bermaksud…
S: Eh. no no…it’s okay. I’m fine. Just teringat kisah dulu. Lagi pun memang I selalu luahkan perasaan I dalam blog.
P: You masih teringatkan dia ke?
S: Tak, langsung tak. Err...boleh tak kalau kita tak bincang pasal tu?
P: Okay. I pun tak nak spoil kan mood weekend you. But you know, I can always lend my ears for you.
S: I really appreciate that, Puteri. Thanks a lot.
P: By the way, you ni suka post jiwang-jiwang ke?
S: Tak semua macam tulah. Ada jugak yang best. You dah baca post ‘Lurah Dendam’?
P: Oooh...yang tu ke? Eiiy...jahat la you ni. Tak baik tau mengintai orang punya lurah.
S: Mana ada. Tu kisah time I belajar dulu. Tak sengaja pun terpandang. Tapi seronok jugak teringat kenangan time belajar dulu bila baca semula.
P: You pandai mengarangla. Situation yang biasa-biasa pun buat I seronok baca
S: Thanks. Bila dah tension sangat dengan kerja-kerja kat ofis, kat situ lah nak mengadu, nak mengarut. Hahaha

Tiba-tiba talian terputus. Apehal? Aku terus call Puteri,

S: Sorry, bateri handset I habis tadi. Jom sambung balik.
P: Saf, you tak buat apa-apa hari ni kan?
S: Em, petang ni I ingat nak pergi servis motor sikit since esok nak ke Cameron
P: O ye ke. I guess you will busy then.
S: Can I ask why?
P: Tak ada apalah.
S: Your tone seems different. I ada terbau ikan ni.
P: Bau ikan? Eeiiiiy, I dah mandi la. What do you mean?
S: Hahaha. Rileks, I smell something fishy.
P: Oh. Itu ke bau ikan? Hahaha, lawak lah you ni.
S: So, tell me…

- terdiam seketika -

P: Emm…Jom hang out

Betul ke apa yang aku dengar ni?

Memang meletihkan. Seminggu balik ke kampung sambil beraya Aidiladha kat Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

Mane tak letih, dalam seminggu tu banyak sungguh aktiviti

-menggali dan menanam anak pokok pisang
-ikut shopping kat Kota Bharu (fyi; setiap kali raya, kesibukan KB memang mengalahkan KL. mana tak patah kaki den nak follow shopping nih)

dan last skali

-tembak menembak dengan d60

p/s: nti den upload la gambar2 best. skarang, nak rehat lepas drive dari KB ke Shah Alam. Pinggang ni sikit je lagi nak patah

Trip to IPTC: Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah

Apehal? Ada pergaduhan ke. Aku mula memetik picu. Em, bukan picu pistol, tapi kemre je.

Jeng jeng jeng...Isteri PM datang melawat rupanya.

(aku mula berangan).

Nah, ini hasilnya...
